Klaus Reymann

The Scientific Board of the International Symposium on Neuroprotection and Neurorepair proudly announces

  • The Klaus Reymann Young Scientist’s Award and
  • The Georg Reiser Prize on Neurobiochemistry
  • The Alexander Baethmann Young Scientist´s Brain Edema Research Award

Professor Klaus Reymann and Professor Georg Reiser initiated the ISN&N series in Magdeburg, Germany and served as meeting presidents from 1996 to 2014. Both prizes are announced to honor the invaluable contribution and outstanding scientific excellence both provided for the meeting. Klaus Reymann und Georg Reiser still serve in the ISN&N Scientific Board.

The Klaus Reymann Young Scientist’s Award
From 1968 to 1973 Klaus Reymann studied Biology/Neurophysiology at the Lomonossow University in Moscow. He obtained his PhD in 1979 for single unit and EEG recording in freely moving animals. From 1977-1991 Reymann was a postdoctoral fellow of Hansjürgen Matthies, the doyen of East German Neuroscience. In 1989 he received the postdoctoral lecture qualification (habilitation) for his work on mechanisms of synaptic plasticity. In 1994 Reymann became a full Professor for Pharmacology at the Medical Faculty of the Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg.

Since 1997 Klaus Reymann is a member of the Leibniz-Institute for Neurobiology at Magdeburg where he established the Department of Neurophysiology, where he could demonstrate the late phase of long-term potentiation and the role of metabotropic glutamate receptors in plasticity. Between 1996 and 2010 Reymann was a co-founder and director of two biotech companies working on stroke protection, post-lesional plasticity and stem cell repair. During his time at the German Center for Neurodegenerative diseases (2010-2015) he focused on mechanisms and prevention of vascular and amyloid-driven neurodegeneration. Together with Georg Reiser, Klaus Reymann is the inaugural president of the ISN&N meeting series.

The Klaus Reymann Young Scientist’s Award is given for excellent contributions to junior scientists. The three best contributions will be honored. The awardees will be identified based on the abstract rating by the blinded reviewer committee. They will be nominated by the ISN&N Scientific Board.

The award comprises:
•    oral presentation at the symposium
•    a € 400 cash prize and
•    an official certificate

The application for the Klaus Reymann Young Scientist’s Award is possible up to the age of 30 years at the time of abstract submission.


Georg Reiser

The Georg Reiser Prize on Neurobiochemistry
After studying physics and chemistry at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich and at Université de Lausanne (Switzerland), Georg Reiser did his PhD-dissertation at the Max-Planck-Institute for Biochemistry until 1977. He studied biochemical properties of cellular and electrical signaling in neural cell lines. In 1982 to 1984, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow and honorary research assistant at University College, London, studying extrasynaptic acetylcholine receptor channels. Then Georg Reiser moved to the University of Tübingen, where he became leader of an independent research group on Molecular Neurophysiology. His worked focused on calcium regulation and role of inositol phosphates in astrocytes and neurons.

In 1993, Georg Reiser was appointed full professor of biochemistry and director of the Institute for Neurobiochemistry at the Medical Faculty, Magdeburg. He was the principal investigator in many national and international research consortia. His research interests have finally focused on molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration and avenues of neuroprotection, besides studying protease-activated receptors, the role of phospholipases and fatty acids in inherited neurodegenerative diseases, and calcium-induced permeability transition in brain mitochondria. Together with Klaus Reymann, Georg Reiser is the inaugural president of the ISN&N meeting series.

The Georg Reiser Prize on Neurobiochemistry honors the best contribution in the fields of neurobiochemistry and research on molecular targets to the 11th ISN&N. The awardee will be identified based on the abstract rating by the blinded reviewer committee. He or she will be nominated by the ISN&N Scientific Board.

Alexander Baethmann

The Alexander Baethmann Young Scientist´s Brain Edema Research Award
Professor Alexander Baethmann, MD, is one of the founding fathers of German neurosurgical research and pioneered the investigation of brain edema in the late 1960ies and early 1970ies. Since Alexander Baethmann was always dedicated to the training of young scientists, this prize is intended to honor the most exceptional contribution of an upcoming researcher working on the mechanisms of brain edema formation.

The Alexander Baethmann Young Scientist’s Brain Edema Research Award
Alexander Baethmann graduated from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) Munich Medical School in 1966. Already as a medical student he got involved in experimental medical research at the Institute for Surgical Research under Walter Brendel where he was supervised by Jürgen Reulen, another pioneer of brain edema research. After graduation he became a research fellow at ICF from 1967-1974. Thereafter he spent two years as post-doctoral fellow with Antonie van Harraveld at the California Institute for Technology, Pasadena, USA. After his return to Munich he worked on his habilitation and became a Professor of Experimental Neurosurgery at ICF in 1979. Next to his interests in brain edema research, specifically the mechanisms of cytotoxic brain edema, Axel Baethmann became the mentor of dozens of clinician scientists, who later exceled in clinical and experimental neurosurgery, e.g. Andreas Unterberg, Oliver Kempski, Walter Stummer, Florian Ringel, Eberhard Uhl, Jürgen Beck, Serge Thal, and many others.

The awardee of the Alexander Baethmann Young Scientist’s Brain Edema Research Award will be identified based on the abstract rating by the blinded reviewer committee and will be nominated by the ISN&N Scientific Board.
